We need the labels so that we can put them on the vertical and horizontal axis. Remember that we need to highlight both the data and the labels in row 1. Left click on cell A1 and drag it down to cell B13. The next thing to do is highlight the data. Here, we have data for advertisement costs as the independent variable and sales as values for the dependent variable.įigure 2: Linear regression data Step 2: Highlight the data We need to have data of two variables, one being the independent and the other dependent variable. To get a linear regression of any data, follow the steps below Step 1: Prepare the data Now that we know a few basics about linear regression, let us look at a step-by-step guide on how to go about drawing this line of best fit. This means that a straight line connecting the most number of points in the scatter graph.Īlso, for purposes of this example, we shall draw our regression line in the Google sheets. We should also be aware that a regression line simply refers to the line of best fit. Master’s degrees enhance your level of expertise in your field, and you can pursue many higher-level careers with the credential-or continue with your education and apply to PhD programs. Master’s degrees take between one and three years to finish, depending on whether you’re able to attend part-time or full-time. PhD programs typically require a master’s before admitting you, though as we noted above, some programs may combine degree tracks to decrease the amount of time to completion. Learn more: How to Get a Bachelor’s Degree Master’s degreeĪ master’s degree is an advanced degree you can pursue after earning your undergraduate degree. Aligning your undergraduate and graduate focuses may also help you move through your graduate coursework faster. While graduate programs don’t always expect applicants to have studied the same field as the one they’re applying to, you will need to explain your interest in the field of your potential graduate work and have some knowledge about what you want to study within it. For example, if you want to obtain a PhD in economics, then it might help to major in economics, finance, business, or even political science as an undergraduate. You don’t have to choose a major related to your eventual doctorate, though it can help to pick a complementary subject so you have a strong foundation before taking higher-level coursework. You will need to earn a bachelor’s degree before pursuing more advanced degrees, like a master’s or PhD. Let's look at the two most important degrees you’ll need to complete before you can begin pursuing your PhD. However, there are some programs that combine the master’s degree with the PhD so that you spend less time earning both and can begin once you finish your bachelor’s degree. Obtaining your PhD requires earning your bachelor’s degree and likely your master’s degree before you can begin applying to doctorate programs. Whereas a PhD tends to promote a historical and theoretical education, a professional degree emphasizes a practical education because it’s designed for you to begin working in medicine or law after you graduate and pass additional licensing requirements. Professional degreesĪ professional degree is the PhD equivalent for certain professions, like for a medical doctor, dentist, or lawyer. If you have significant experience in a professional field, such as business administration or public health, you might choose to pursue a professional doctorate because you can use your knowledge and expertise in more concrete ways. PhDs are focused on producing original research, whereas professional doctorates typically have some professional experience they apply toward researching a solution to a practical problem. PhDs and professional doctorates are similar in that they are both the most advanced academic degrees you can earn, but a PhD requires a dissertation and a professional doctorate requires a doctoral study. In fact, there are two other types of terminal degrees that tend to be more career focused. other terminal degreesĪ PhD is not the only kind of terminal degree you can earn. Learn more: How Long Does It Take to Get a PhD? PhDs vs. For example, it typically takes less than seven years to earn an engineering PhD, while it can take up to 12 years to earn an education PhD. Writing a dissertation is often credited with adding to the length of time it takes to complete a PhD program. It takes between four and seven years to earn your doctorate, though it often depends on what you study. PhD programs typically require you to complete advanced coursework, a comprehensive exam that tests your knowledge of your particular field, and a dissertation (or original body of research), though the specific requirements will differ by program or university. PhDs-also known as doctorates-are terminal degrees, meaning they are the highest level of degree that you can achieve in certain fields, such as cognitive psychology, mathematics, English, economics, evolutionary biology, and public health. For example, earning your PhD in political science means you have a general foundation of the field, but likely also specialize in a more focused area, such as American or comparative politics, or political economy. What is a PhD?Ī PhD is an academic degree that combines general knowledge of a field with specific mastery of an area of subtopic within that field. This article goes beyond the definition of a PhD, and touches on important information you’ll need to know about the degree, so you can decide whether pursuing one is the best choice for you. Students typically pursue a PhD when they're interested in an academic or research career-or if they want to take their education as far as it can go. It stands for “Doctor of Philosophy,” which refers to the immense knowledge a student gains when earning the degree. A PhD is the highest possible academic degree a student can obtain. 8/3/2023 0 Comments Automatic crossbow mythbustersThey will fire once every 2 seconds or so. Repeating and Multi-Fire Weapons: A History from the Zhuge Crossbow Through the AK-47. However, the machine MythBusters built was prone to breakdowns that had to be fixed multiple times. In 2010 a MythBusters episode was dedicated to building and testing a replica, and concluded that its existence as a historical weapon was plausible. The repetition provides the weapon's name, in Greek πολυβόλος, "throwing many missiles", from πολύς ( polys), "multiple, many" and -βόλος ( -bolos) "thrower", in turn from βάλλω ( ballo), "to throw, to hurl", literally a repeating weapon. Upon the bolt being fired, the process is repeated. This one causes the claws to disengage the drawstring and automatically fires the loaded bolt. As the windlass is rotated further back to the very back end, the claws on the mensa meets another lug like the one that pushed the claws into catching the string. With the drawstring pulled back and a bolt loaded on the mensa, the polybolos is ready to be fired. At the same time, a round wooden pole in the bottom of the magazine is rotated via a spiral groove being driven by a rivet attached to the sliding mensa dropping a single bolt from a carved notch in the rotating pole. Once the string is held firm by the trigger mechanism, the windlass is then rotated clockwise pulling the mensa back and drawing the bow string with it. At the very front, a metal lug at the front trigger the latching claws into catching the drawstring. When loading a new bolt and spanning the drawstring, the windlass is rotated counterclockwise by an operator standing on the left side of the weapon this drives the mensa forward towards the bow string. The mensa itself was a sliding plank (similar to that on the gastraphetes) containing the claw latches used to pull back the drawstring and was attached to the chain link. The mechanism is unique in that it is driven by a flat-link chain connected to a windlass. The polybolos would have differed from an ordinary ballista in that it had a wooden hopper magazine, capable of holding several dozen bolts, that was positioned over the mensa (the cradle that holds the bolt prior to firing). Philo left a detailed description of the gears that powered its chain drive (the oldest known application of such a mechanism ) and that placed bolt after bolt into its firing slot. 220 BC) encountered and described a weapon similar to the polybolos, a catapult that could fire again and again without a need for manual reloading. The polybolos was not a crossbow since it used a torsion mechanism, drawing its power from twisted sinew-bundles. The polybolos (the name means "multi-thrower" in Greek ) was an ancient Greek repeating ballista, reputedly invented by Dionysius of Alexandria (a 3rd-century BC Greek engineer at the Rhodes arsenal, ) and used in antiquity. What is Mother Night About and Why Should I Care? But it also asks deeper questions about what makes us who we are, what makes us act the way we act, and what makes us justify things that shouldn't be justified.īut if that sounds too heavy, Shmoopers, don't fret. Mother Night looks at our most self-serving assumptions about war and reminds us that it's a bloody endeavor that has more to do with real-life horror stories than shiny banners and ticker tape parades. Vonnegut has a lot to say about pretending that war is the beautiful and noble thing it is in most propaganda. It turns out that you can't distort the truth without consequences. If you ask Vonnegut, this is some serious stuff: even though Campbell technically didn't mean any of the nasty things he wrote about Jews or the great things he wrote about Hitler, people still died because of it. And that's just as it should be, because the central figure is a secret agent propagandist whose job it is to distort the truth. (No one seems to know that he was only pretending to be a Nazi.) After that, he jumps all over the place, discussing his life in Germany during the war and then later in New York City, where he was essentially in hiding.Īll of this play with structure and chronology makes it difficult to ever really know for sure what's true and what's not in this novel. He starts in medias res in the early 1960s, from a prison cell in Israel, where he's about to be tried for his crimes. It's no surprise that he's an unreliable narrator, given the crazy life he's led. What we get in Mother Night is ostensibly Campbell's memoirs, written by himself. And not just any Nazi: Campbell pretended to be a defector from the U.S., and as a Nazi, he put his skills as a poet and playwright to use writing propaganda so incredibly atrocious-and by that we mean effective-that pretty much everyone was in awe of his work. This guy spent World War II spying for the United States…by pretending to be a Nazi. Campbell, Jr., as smarmy a narrator as you possibly could hope for. Our hammy, beleaguered guide to the goings-on in Mother Night is Howard W. What you're about to get in Mother Night, Vonnegut's dark postmodern tale from 1961, is a text full of Nazi jokes, dead people jokes, a wild and wacky cast of spies and war criminals, and a plot so twisted and mindboggling it'll make your head spin. Cards Against Humanity ain't got nothin' on Kurt Vonnegut. 8/3/2023 0 Comments Virgin margarita strawberryPour into glasses filled with ice and top off with sparkling water or club soda. After playing with five different kids in short succession, I’ve found that it feels like a unique game each time. It’s simple enough for young ones to understand and still enjoyably challenging for tweens, teens, and adults.įor adults: I loved this game back when I first started playing it. The tag line on the box is exactly right: “It’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s challenging, it’s Sequence!” One reason it is so appealing is that it’s the perfect game for families with multiple kids (mine span eight years). This game offers an alluring combination of luck, variables, stealth, and strategy that had my kids and me hooked. The Spruce / Sarah Vanbuskirk Entertainment Value: We were hooked That player then draws a card to add to his or her hand. During a turn, each person plays a card from his or her hand, placing it in the discard pile and marking one of the corresponding card faces on the board with the color-coded token. The gist is that the player or team who gets two “sequences” of five tokens each down on the board first, wins. I appreciate that the concept of Sequence is simple-all you really need to do is make a match-and can help acclimate kids to playing traditional card games. I personally think Sequence is more fun with a single opponent or two, but I’ve found that team play is a good way to incorporate younger players. This game can accommodate two or three single or team players up to 12 total. Red tokens should only be used when there is a third player, which is why there are fewer. Meanwhile, the playing pieces are color-coded tokens: 50 blue, 50 green, and 35 red. The sequence deck contains 104 cards, including eight Jacks: four with two eyes and four with one eye (more on that later). Read on to see if Sequence is still a royal flush. I was thrilled to rediscover this old favorite with a new crop of kids. (Having three more babies might have something to do with that.) Now that my younger ones are all old enough for cards and other family games, I’m testing out board games to bring into our game night rotation. Unfortunately, after lots of love, our board ripped, cards and pieces were lost, and we forgot all about it. So, when I came across the Jax Sequence game (essentially a board game melded with cards) several years back, I was more than excited to give it a try.īack then, my two older kids and I were big fans and played the game regularly. It’s fair to say that cards are in my blood, and as long as a deck of cards is involved, I’m in. My childhood was defined, more than anything else, by playing cards, often into the wee hours of the night at a table that always had room for one more, with my Grandma Ethel at the helm.
